Happiness Curriculum : WHAT WE DO

Happiness Curriculum is offered as an extra-curricular activity both in school and after school. These Happiness Curriculum programs were successful, with students reporting increased mental focus, improved academic performance, greater ability to manage anger and emotions, improved relationships with their teachers, parents and peers, improved sleep and a host of other benefits. Since 2011 STRAS+ Sadvidya program for Schools has been delivered to over thousands of students.
As a result of the great benefits and success of the Happiness Curriculum program, the leadership of Sorsfort had now introduced the same for the international students.
As Happiness Curriculum for Schools grows we continue to explore program development and partnerships to create a sustainable impact that uplifts the lives of youth. The program is conceptualized as a service to students and is non profit in nature.

Happiness Curriculum : WHY WE DO

Unmanaged emotional reactions to stress not only lead to behavior problems in young people, but also create physiological conditions that inhibit learning.(McCraty et al 1999) Yet, the standard school curriculum provides little or no time for teaching practical skills that young people need to cope with the stress and negative emotions they experience on a daily basis.
Research indicates one of the greatest impediments to learning is stress. Stress can disturb the balance of important chemical messengers in the brain. One of these is corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), the production of which is increased during times of mental stress. Excess activation of this hormone disrupts the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other by delaying transmission of information across synapses (Joels & Baram 2009). Cortisol is another hormone that is activated by stress. The activation of excess cortisol also interferes with neurotransmitter function and makes it difficult to retrieve long-term memories. Research also indicates that stress has a negative impact on performance. Stress is associated with decreased performance in tasks that require attention and the ability to shift focus (Liston et al 2006) and chronic stress has been shown to decreases students’ concentration, learning ability, test scores and overall academic performance.
In addition, young people face emotional issues such as low self-esteem, depression and anxiety that are a source of great stress. Without a healthy alternative, students often turn to unhealthy strategies to cope with these problems such as smoking, alcohol or drugs. Other signs of stress in young adults are aggression, withdrawal from social interaction and engaging in acts of violence. In fact, research demonstrates that stress plays a negative role in normal social interactions. High levels of stress and anxiety are associated with “self-focus,” (Eysenck 1997) rather than the “other-focus” necessary for building relationships. Case studies have found that perpetrators of violence in schools are often highly isolated individuals (Lear et al 2003). With incidents of violence in schools on the rise, maintaining healthy social connection among the student population has become a crucial component in academic and school performance.
By offering youth practical tools and life skills to manage stress, Happiness Curriculum for Schools is addressing a critical issue in education today. As students learn to reduce stress and manage emotions they gain the ability to focus and perform well academically at school, as well as the ability to build more positive relationships with their peers, parents and teachers.

Happiness Curriculum Leads The Upward Spiral of Positive Emotions, Social Connetcions And Health

People who experience warmer, more upbeat emotions may have better physical health because they make more social connections, according to a new study published in Psychological Science.
To study the bodily effects of up-regulating positive emotions, the researchers zeroed in on vagal tone, an indicator of how a person’s vagus nerve is functioning. The vagus nerve helps regulate heart rate and is also a central component of a person’s social-engagement system. (Happiness Curriculum for Schools’ “Mind, Mediation and Memory” techniques are designed to target the vagus nerve.)
According to the UNC Chapel Hill study, people who have a higher vagal tone tend to be better at regulating their emotions. Participants who entered the study with higher vagal tone showed steeper increases in positive emotions over the course of the study. As participants’ positive emotions increased, so did their reported social connections. As social connections increased, so did vagal tone. In contrast, participants in the wait-list group showed virtually no change in vagal tone over the course of the study.
The study concluded that positive emotions may be an essential psychological nutrient that builds health, just like getting enough exercise and eating leafy greens.
From an educational perspective, this is great news. We all want our students (and ourselves!) to self-regulate, enjoy positive emotions, feel connected, and have healthy hearts!

Que. Which learning is better: Individual or in Group?

Both have its advantages and disadvantages. But normally a group learning in an Institution is better as apart from Sir, you learn from each other also. The group learning is possible when your institution invites Sir for the Academic life Coaching covering Happiness Curriculum. The group coaching makes the financial viability of happiness curriculum reach the corners of the world.

Que. What is the group size while you are teaching in a group/Institution?

The group size suggested is always between 20 to 25 students.
We have always recommended Insitutuion to break the group into two or more classes, if the number of students is more than 25.

Que. What’s the difference between academic coaching and tutoring?

Tutoring is about mastering a specific content; academic coaching is about honing the learning process. The coach then teaches new skills and perseveres until the student has integrated both the new habits and the ability to problem solve independently the next time a learning challenge presents itself.

Que. Where do sessions take place?

All sessions take place 100% over phone, or Skype. However, if you want to take a rejuvenation detour to Bangalore covering Ayurveda & Yoga, you will be able to meet the Sir along with other corporate students. The program is currently held once an year and we suggest an early registration by dropping us the eMail with Subject “Interested in Annual Meet at Bangalore”

Que. How do virtual sessions work, and are they really as effective as in-person sessions?

I know it seems counter-intuitive, but my experience is proving that virtual sessions are often as good, or better, than in-person coaching. Thanks to Google Docs, screen sharing, video chatting, online drawing tools, and more, virtual clients stay busy throughout the session.

Que. How do we get started with coaching?

Step One: Contact us writing an eMail to us.

Step Two: Schedule a 15 minute interview / consultation for parent and student in your home (via skype). Our goals for this meeting are
a) to see if we’re a good fit,
b) for me to see the student in his/her “natural habitat,” and
c) to set a clear focus for our work together.
